The invention relates to a closure applying apparatus (l) suitable for use in capping machines for placing on a container (B) having a threaded neck portion (26) and an annular collar (30) below said neck portion a tamper-evident screw-type capsule (A) made of rigid plastic material and having a lower skirt portion (27) which is connected by a plurality of thin frangible bridge portions (28) to an upper internally threaded skirt portion (22) and is provided with an inwardly projecting bead (29) for snap engaging beneath said annular collar (30) as a result of screwing of the capsule (A) on the container (B). The apparatus comprises a rotary, vertically reciprocable capping chuck having a plurality of jaws (4) for gripping the capsule (A), each jaw (4) being provided at its lower end with an inner flange (l4) which engages from below the edge of the lower skirt portion (27). The flanges (l4) of the jaws (4) form an abutment surface for the lower skirt portion (27), which absorbs the forces produced during snap movement of the inwardly projecting head (29) over the collar (30) of the container (B), thus preventing fracture of the brigdes (28) during the capping operation.

The aim of the invention is to increase the reliability of operation by eliminating the breaks in the jumpers during the closure process. The device contains mounted with rotatable and reciprocating movements of the cartridge 1 and the clamps 2 hinged on it, each of which has a protrusion 3 for supporting into the capsule 4, an annular section 5, a flange 6 formed at the lower end of the clamp 2 on its the inner surface at a distance from the protrusion 3 corresponding to the height of the capsule 4, while the flanges 6 are arranged so that they form an annular contact surface to grip the lower skirt 7 of the capsule 4.
The cartridge 1-contains a leading element 8, having the form of an expanding cone, and a pipe 9 with a flange 10 and a ring 11 on which the coil spring 12 is supported, the free end of which cooperates with the element 8. The upper outer part of each clip 2 has a toroidal projection 13 for interaction with the element 8, and in its central part a recess 14 is formed, in which the end part of the leading pin 15 placed in the element 8 is placed.
An element 16 having teeth 17 extending in a vertical direction is screwed to the lower inner end of each clip 2. In the pipe 9, the rod 18 moves with a pinch 19, having a cylindrical section 20, a conical section 21 and an end cylindrical section 22.
The inner surface of each clip 2 has a toothed protrusion 23 with a conical top surface 24 and a conical side surface 25. Capsule 4 has a horizontal end wall 26, a sealing ring 27 made of plastic mastic, and a top skirt 28 with vertical cuts 29.
The device works as follows
In the open position of the cartridge 1, the cylindrical section 20 of the sleeve 19 cooperates with the conical surface 25 of the clamp 2, which assumes an inclined position and rests on the flange 10 of the pipe 9. As it moves downward, the cartridge 1 rests against the neck of the container 30 with the capsule 4 attached to it. In this case, the cyanindrical region 22 of the tube 19 interacts with a horizontal end wall 26 capsules /, J 4.
Upon further lowering of the cartridge 1, a relative axial movement takes place between clips 2 and 5 and 19, as a result of which the cylindrical section 20 moves away from the conical side surface 25, and the conical section 21 interacts with the conical top surface 24, thereby allowing the clamps 2 to close the capsule 4 .
In the closed position, the protrusions 3 of the presses 2 interact with the horizontal end wall 26 of the capsule 4, rotating it, and the flanges 6 of the clamps 2 are in contact with the bottom edge of the lower skirt 7.
When the capsule 4, clamped by the cartridge 1, is wrapped around the container 30, the bottom surface of the flange of the lower skirt 7 interacts with the annular protrusion 31 of the container 30, while the thin jumpers 32 are compressed, and the lower and upper skirts 7 and 28 interact with the other. As a result, the lower skirt 7 is subjected to compressive forces before the bead of the capsule 4 passes through the annular protrusion 31 of the container 30.
Capsule 4 snaps into place due to the movement of the lower skirt 7 relative to the upper skirt 28. caused by the removal of compressive forces due to the flanges 6 of the clamps 2, which form the contact surface for the lower crumb of the lower skirt 7. At the same time, the thin bridges 32 cannot stretch beyond the original length, which prevents rupture of the jumpers 32 in the process of closure.
At the end of the sealing operation, the stem lowers p 19 and the clips open, releasing the capsule.
